Our Story

At the entrance of the VOSD Sanctuary & Hospital is a beautiful temple dedicated to Kaal Bhairav, a deity worshipped by Hinds who is believed to be the manifestation of Lord Shiva. Bhairav’s vahan or vehicle is Shvan or a dog, who has been represented alongside the idol at or temple in VOSD. Every day, the sculpture of Bhairav - fondly known as ‘Bade Baba’ among our staff – is polished and shone with oil, so is the statue of the dog. A lamp is lit and we pray with folded hands that He watches over all our babies, keeping them safe and protecting them from harm.

Treat dogs with kindness & compassion

There are various instances in Hindu mythology, which support the sacred belief that dogs are an integral part of our lives. Centuries-old wall carvings, statues, and imagery of Hindu gods have feature canines – some of the revered deities being Dattatreya, Kaal Bhairav, and Indra. Other holy texts such as the Mahabharata also mention the presence of a dog. Some devotees of Shirdi Sai Baba have shared accounts of Him appearing before them in the form of a black dog when they needed support during the darkest times of their lives. Dogs even according to astrology are considered auspicious – people suffering from the negative effects of the planets Rahu and Shani might find some respite when they feed stray dogs.

If the gods we revere have taught us

As one enters the VOSD Sanctuary, to the left is a beautiful shrine of Kaal Bhairav – a deity worshipped by Hindus who is believed to be a manifestation of Lord Shiva. Bhairav’s vahan (vehicle) is Shvan (dog), which is also beautifully sculpted into the idol we house in our premises, and greatly revere.
